Cricket Helmets

Now a common sight in cricket, helmets did not become popular amongst batsmen till the late 1970s. They were first worn in test cricket by Australian batsman Graham Yallop in 1978 against the West Indies. Helmets are designed to absorb the impact of the cricket ball and to protect the head (and more importantly the skull) from injury. WIth balls now being hurtled at 140km/h+ and bouncers a common occurence, helmets have now become a must wear protective equipment for batsmen. Helmets also contain a protective visor for the face. Helmets are also worn by wicket keepers ( especially those who stand up to the batsman) as well as close in fielders ( short leg, silly mid off etc)
